You are allowed to dream

This is an article I wrote for COTN Voices and decided to repost here as I wanted everyone to read it too. You can view it on the COTN website here.

I was walking down the aisle in Woolworths the other day when a little boy caught my attention. He was standing next to his father that was unpacking a few things from his trolley and kept asking questions which his father answered with a simple “Yes” or “No”….well that was until he asked, “Dad, why aren’t we rich?”

I was stopped dead in my tracks, how could the kid ask that to his father in public? I was wondering what the outcome of this could be…would the father ignore the kid? Would he tell him to keep quiet?

When the father looked at the kid and cleared his throat my ears assumed their alert position, cutting out other noises and activities taking place around me.

Two seconds felt like minutes waiting for an answer..when finally the man sighed and said, “I was never allowed to dream, son.”

I almost fell on my back right there and then. He wasn’t allowed to dream as a kid? How could someone be so cruel? My majority of my childhood was spent dreaming about things, so I assumed that his parents were more hands on, physical people than thought pushers. They wanted to have their boy work hard to earn his money, not sit on a bench conjuring up ideas waiting for the next big thing…

It brought me to the realization that even though we have a lot of hard working citizens around us, there are a lot of people that dream for a living and totally miss the working aspect of life. They don’t realize that dreams without actions are only thoughts and that is where a lot of people miss the plot totally.

Joel Barker said it well, “Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

So remember that there is nothing wrong with dreaming. Just equal your actions and work hard to get where you want to be in life. You determine your own success and by believing in yourself and your dreams you have already accomplished much more than most other people in the world.

wow, mate.. that is a hell of a story…
but I must say that the majority of the people (including me) find it hard to actually dream of something..

in my case it seems like “they” want to program my dreams.. and make me dream about expensive cars, playboy models and all sorts of gadgets… but I really think the dreams should be different.

at times I try hard to stop and think about what I really want.. I think it all comes down to deep analysis of yourself, which I want to focus on in the next few months..

    so the plan is:

    1. understand myself
    2. dream MY OWN dreams
    3. write a plan
    4. follow it

    what you say? :)

If you really want to dream. Go sit in a dark room with nothing around you and think back to when you were a little boy. Think of the things that made you the most happy. Now think of where you want to be when you are 65 years old(could be any age). Let the thoughts come as they want. You have to dream about things to enjoy life and have a purpose to live it.

Your plan is great, however I would reword it to: 1. Figure out my current situation. 2. Dream my own dreams 3. Write down my dreams and set goals to accomplish them 4. Follow my plan to the best of my ability.

Watch out for getting sidetracked by little things that don’t really have an impact on your life.

That is a very inspiring story!!! I guess anyone capable of understanding the moral can put them self in thiestory!! Dreaming I would say Day dreaming!! without any actions or work towards it, is just to make u feel happy for that moment only , and everything is back to square one after you come to your real world!!

Dreams with action , and while doing the actions small things getting accomplished for completing your dream gets you the real happiness (not the happiness you get while you just dream), so earning it by your work is something more confident or say basic structure of your dream!!!

Dreams without action is Dream without any base!! Dreams with action is Dream with strong fundamental Base!

    Thanks Jacques for the Article!!
