I Went to a Party, Mom – (Don’t Drink and Drive)

Drinking and driving, one of the major killers of teenagers and parents alike. People don’t understand the severe consequences of driving under the influence until something happens that can’t be taken back. Thousands of innocent people die due to drunk people making mistakes on the road. Why should innocent lives be taken? That isn’t fair…is it?

I know some many people that have lost loved ones and friends due to driving under the influence. Are you really that naive to that that you can drive drunk? Once you have had a few beers, rather phone a cab or get a friend(Sober) to take you home.

Believe me….It isn’t worth it. Drinking and driving KILLS.

(I am aware that this is a bit off topic from my usual posts, but it’s weekend and people will be partying up a storm again and they have to realize that they become killers behind the wheel if they are intoxicated.)

I found a poem by an unknown author that I posted on Facebook back in 2008, that just made it all such a reality to me again.

You can read the poem below and let me know what you think of it.

I Went To A Party Mom

‘I went to a party, Mom’
I went to a party,
and remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom
so I had a sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
the way you said I would,
that I didn’t drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
and your advice to me was right
as the party finally ended,
and the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my car,
sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mom
something I expected least.

Now I’m lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
‘The kid that caused this wreck was
drunk, ‘
Mom, His voice seems far away.

My own blood’s all around me,
as I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
‘This girl is going to die.’

I’m sure the guy had no idea,
while he was flying high,
because he chose to drink and drive,
now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
like a hundred stabbing knives.

Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
tell daddy to be brave,
and when I go to heaven,
put ‘Daddy’s Girl’ on my grave.

Someone should have taught him,
that its wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I’d still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mom
I’m getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
and I’m so unprepared.

I wish that you could hold me Mom,
as I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say I love you, Mom
So I love you and good-bye.

This is a very powerful poem that touches you from the very start.

So be safe and please don’t drink and drive…

If you observe symptoms of alcohol abuse in a friend or a member of your family, it is recommended that you take action and bring them to a residential alcohol abuse treatment center before something tragic happens because of excessive drinking.

Thank You so much for this post.

I think there’s no wrong in posting such important messages in any category of blogs.

Important messages must be spread through any media we think would help it reach a larger audience.

DWI is one of the worst things I can think of for one to do – because besides Murder, etc, if you drink and drive you get to defend yourself by saying you have a “disability” or you can’ control yourself. And the sick thing is a lot of people (lawyers & courtrooms especially) believe it.

It is a very real and very common problem, and society needs to make it a more serious crime than it already is.
